The Grit Of A Mom Entrepreneur: Founder of SitByCare

A heart-warming story of a mother-daughter love by an inspiring mom-entrepreneur.

An iron lady, Geetika Sinha whose maternal love brought her to the path of entrepreneurship. She is an inspiration to many other mom-entrepreneurs and a true example of sheer strength and compassion. She is the living embodiment of the fact that a Woman is truly unstoppable. Her story is bound to motivate female entrepreneurs around the world.

Her story begins when she got married in the US and started her journey in the US leaving her hometown in India. Right after a year of getting married, she was blessed with a beautiful daughter, Akanksha whom she lovingly called “Titli” meaning a butterfly. It was then that Geetika decided to be a stay home mom. In today’s modern world, some of us often question the decision of women who choose to be a stay-at-home mom. Geetika was told “you are so smart why don’t you have a career” but she chose to follow her heart and do what she truly enjoyed, “being completely available for my only child”.

Geetika was a dedicated mother who wanted to be of utmost support to her daughter. Geetika was living her best life with her daughter, raising her and sharing her growth and accomplishments. Akanksha was truly a golden child. One of the most joyous moments they shared was when Titli got accepted into her dream school, the University of Chicago. It was exuberant news for the family and celebrations were at peak, little did they know that their life was going to change soon after that.

Titli went to Chicago and within a few months, they got the dooming news. She has pneumonia, and things only went downhill after that and soon after Geetika lost her only child. “Titli passed away”. It was a life-changing moment for Geetika, she suffered the biggest loss of her life and as she says “there is nothing that can affect her more now”. She moved to San Francisco in search of her purpose with nothing but some clothes and the memories of her late daughter. She tried different career options but nothing seemed to come naturally to her. She said “I tried working as a healthcare worker, teacher and even sales associate but nothing seemed to come naturally to me, I was just not the same emotionally”

It was in one such pursuit that she thought of the time she spent with her daughter in the hospital and the place that felt extremely lonely. She empathized with the patients and saw her daughter go through her last few days in an isolated room. This led to the idea of a “SitByCare”. It is a start-up, a marketplace that provides a platform for patients in care and medical facilities as well as at home to find companion sitters during lonely times. A companion sitter does not need to be in the healthcare field to become a companion sitter.  All you need is some compassion and a big heart. She states that family members sometimes have other responsibilities and can get busy. During those times, patients need a companion to make them feel more hopeful and cheerful about life.

Geetika found her purpose and became what one would call a mom-entrepreneur. Her motherly love led her to an inspiring entrepreneurship career.

Geetika’s story is a remarkable example for mothers who suffer the loss of a child, that there is still hope, no matter how hard it gets, there is still something that they can do to memorialize their precious ones gone too early while working for a bigger purpose.
